Iranian Rial Plummets Amid Central Bank Intervention and Economic Pressure
The Iranian rial has hit a new low as the central bank injects up to $2 billion into the market in an attempt to support the currency. The US dollar is currently trading at around 2.688 million rials, up from 2.632 million on Friday. This comes as Iran faces significant economic pressure due to US sanctions and a naval blockade.
According to Mehdi Darabi, an aide to the central bank's governor on foreign exchange affairs, the decline of the rial is partly due to false predictions by US officials of the collapse of the Iranian economy. He stated that 'it is suggested that the Iranian economy is about to crash... The enemy is using this to affect the exchange rate of our currency.'
Iran's inflation rate has exceeded 70 percent, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to afford basic necessities or rent. Many Iranians are seeking safe havens for their savings by buying dollars, other hard currencies, or gold.
