Ireland Prepares for Euro Transition with Dual Pricing Code
The introduction of the euro currency in Ireland has sparked concerns about price increases among consumers. To address this issue, the Irish government and consumer groups have launched a national code of practice on dual pricing.
Under the new code, retailers will display prices in both euros and Irish pounds ahead of the changeover to the single currency. This is intended to help consumers become familiar with the cost of goods and services in euro before the currency changeover takes place.
The controversy surrounding Glanbia's price increase on a pint of milk has heightened concerns about potential price rises among consumers. The Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Tom Kitt, urges consumers to remain vigilant and says that retailers who sign up to the code are committing to trading in an honest and transparent manner.
As part of the initiative, every household in Ireland is due to receive a free electronic euro converter by mid-November. Many retailers and businesses have already started displaying prices in both pounds and euros, and it's expected that this practice will become widespread following the launch of the national code.
