Italy Seeks Clarity on Lagarde's ECB Future, No Italian Candidate in Sight
Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has expressed his desire for clarity on rumors surrounding European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde's potential early departure. Giorgetti emphasized that Rome is currently without a candidate to promote for the top ECB job, citing Italy's recent success with Carlo Comporti, the new president of ESMA, who will take office in the near future.
Although Lagarde is set to officially leave her position by October next year, speculation about her resignation has persisted. Spain is reportedly lobbying for Bank for International Settlements General Manager Pablo Hernandez de Cos to become the next ECB president, while the Netherlands is backing Klaas Knot, its former central bank chief.
An Italian official, who asked not to be named, suggested that Rome might support the Spanish candidate due to Spain's backing of Comporti. However, it remains unclear how Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will ultimately decide on this matter.
