Italy's Debt Burden Rises at Alarming Rate Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Italy's economy minister Giancarlo Giorgetti sounded the alarm over the country's rising debt burden, warning that it is increasing at an alarming rate due to geopolitical tensions. In a speech via video link from Dublin, where European finance ministers were meeting, Giorgetti said inflation will inevitably rise if wars in Ukraine and the Middle East continue.
Giorgetti pointed out that Italian borrowing costs have surged, with the 3-year BTP bond yield reaching its highest level since June 2024 at 3.43%, while a 7-year BTP bond fetched a 3.98% gross yield, the highest since November 2023.
The minister emphasized that rate hikes adopted by central banks across Europe and the United States are unlikely to curb rising consumer prices. He argued that inflation stems from supply shocks, not an overheated economy demanding restrictive monetary policy.
