Japan and the United States have coordinated their efforts to support the yen for the first time since 2011, according to Japan's finance ministry. The joint intervention was aimed at countering excessive volatility in the Japanese currency after months of sustained weakness.

The operation, carried out with the U.S. Treasury Department on Friday, marked the first joint action between the two countries since 2011. Tokyo and Washington have signalled that they remain in close contact and are prepared to undertake further coordinated intervention if necessary.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States was assisting Japan in supporting the yen as a gesture of friendship and to help maintain global economic stability.
