Japan Bolsters Support for Solomon Islands Elections Amid Beijing's Pacific Push
Japan has decided to provide up to 430 million yen ($2.8 million) in grants to help the Solomon Islands hold fair elections, as Tokyo seeks to strengthen ties with Pacific island countries where China's influence is growing.
The Japanese Foreign Ministry announced that Japan will collaborate with the U.N. Development Program to give technical advice and assist the local election management board in running unified elections scheduled for 2028.
This move is seen as a strategic effort by Japan to counter Beijing's increasing clout over the Solomon Islands, which has been a key player in China's efforts to expand its influence in the Pacific region.
Solomon Islands' Prime Minister Matthew Wale, who took office in May, has signaled a departure from his country's previous pro-China stance and has announced that his government will review the comprehensive security pact with China signed in 2022.
