Japan Bond Data Could Signal Another Crypto Market Shake-Up
Bitcoin (BTC) traders are closely monitoring Japan's upcoming trading data release, set for October 8 at 8:50 a.m. Tokyo time. The data could reveal whether a recent French bond selloff has spread beyond European markets, potentially impacting global financial conditions.
The selloff was triggered by a Japanese fund that dumped all its French government bonds, shifting investments into German bonds and short-term Japanese debt. The move reflects concerns over France's high debt levels, Paris owes about 119% of its yearly economic output, and rising borrowing costs, with the 10-year bond rate hitting 4.96%, the highest since 2002.
Japan's Ministry of Finance will release weekly trading data, though it won't specify France directly. Previous reports showed significant foreign bond selling, with Japanese investors offloading ¥684.5 billion ($4.3 billion) in the week ending September 26 and ¥1.9 trillion ($12 billion) the week before.
The connection to Bitcoin lies in the yen carry trade, where investors borrow cheap yen to buy higher-yielding assets abroad. When the yen strengthens, these loans become costlier, forcing investors to sell assets. During the 2024 yen shock, Bitcoin and Ethereum prices fell as much as 20%, raising concerns that similar pressure could resurface if Thursday's data shows heavy foreign bond sales.
