Japan Capital Spending Surges as BOJ Rate Hike Looms
Japanese companies have increased their capital spending on plant and equipment in the second quarter, marking a significant improvement from the previous quarter. According to the Ministry of Finance data, capital spending rose by 1.6% compared to the same period last year.
This uptick in business confidence could lead to an upgrade in the economic growth outlook and support the case for near-term rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). The BOJ is set to raise rates as soon as its September 17-18 meeting, with some sources suggesting a more aggressive pace of increases.
The government's pledge to use fiscal spending to spur private investment has also contributed to this boost in business confidence. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's planned investment incentives are expected to encourage Japanese firms to bring forward capital spending and support a solid outlook for business investment.
