Japan CPI Steady as BOJ Hikes Rates Amid Rising Inflationary Pressures
The Japanese consumer price index remained steady in August, according to data released by the Statistics Bureau. The core inflation rate, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, grew at a slower pace than expected, coming in at 1.7% year-on-year.
This reading is closely watched by the Bank of Japan as it considers raising interest rates for the second time this year. The BOJ meeting concluded with a widely anticipated rate hike of 25 basis points, bringing rates to their highest levels in 31 years.
Analysts at Capital Economics expect inflation to rise above the BOJ's 2% target in the coming months, citing increasing energy costs and producer price index inflation that recently soared to an over three-year high.
