Japan Economy Resilient Despite Rising Costs

Japan's economy is showing resilience in the face of rising costs from the Middle East conflict. In an annual white paper released on Friday, July 24, the government reported that Japanese companies are passing on increased expenses at a faster rate than they did during the Ukraine war in 2022.

The paper highlighted that corporate and household inflation expectations are accelerating, aligning with the Bank of Japan's view that inflationary pressures are becoming embedded in the economy. Companies' spending appetite remains strong, with investment plans exceeding historical averages for two consecutive years.

However, the white paper warned that attention is needed regarding the potential impact of the Middle East conflict on Japan's economy and output gap. The Cabinet Office, which compiles the paper and is overseen by Economy Minister Minoru Kiuchi, cautioned against underestimating the effects of the conflict.
