Japan ETF Continues Trading After Tokyo Closes
A Japan ETF can keep moving even after Tokyo's stock market closes due to its unique structure and connection to various global markets.
The iShares MSCI Japan ETF, or EWJ, is a US-listed exchange-traded fund that tracks the MSCI Japan Index. It holds Japanese equities and trades on the American exchange, following a different schedule than Tokyo's cash market.
When Tokyo closes, the ETF doesn't have fresh cash-market prices for its underlying stocks, but it can still be affected by various factors such as the yen's value against the dollar, Japanese equity futures, overseas markets, and new information. This makes the ETF a live market for Japanese equity exposure even after Tokyo's cash session ends.
