Japan Imports Soar 28%, Exports Rise 19.3% Amid Oil Price Pressures
Japan's imports surged by 28% in August compared to the same period last year, driven by higher crude oil prices that boosted energy costs. This marks the third consecutive month of significant increases in imports, according to Ministry of Finance data released on September 16.
The trade figures show that elevated oil prices are swelling import bills and fueling inflationary pressures, which may prompt the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to raise interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting on Friday. The BOJ has been expected to hike rates by 25 basis points, but this latest data could strengthen the case for additional rate hikes in the months ahead.
Exports, however, remained firm, rising by 19.3% year-on-year in August, supported by strong chip-related shipments and higher non-ferrous metal prices. Exports to the US and China also saw significant increases of 24.9% and 20.6%, respectively.
