Japan July Inflation Expectations Hold Steady at 1.8% Core CPI
The Japanese government's July inflation data is expected to remain steady, according to forecasters. The core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which excludes fresh food, is predicted to rise by 1.8% year-over-year in August.
This projection comes from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, which releases the CPI data on a regular basis. The median forecast from analysts at Mace News puts the total CPI at 2.0%, with a range between 1.9% and 2.1%. The core-core CPI, which excludes both fresh food and energy, is also expected to reach 2.0%, up from 1.9% in July.
The uptrend in consumer inflation is attributed to rising energy costs due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and a weak yen. This has pushed up import costs, leading to higher prices for fresh food and rents. Additionally, labor shortages and elevated import costs have contributed to increased costs for businesses, which are being passed on to consumers.
The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) 2% inflation target may be within reach as the core CPI is expected to rise 1.8% in August, a steady increase from 1.6% in June and 1.4% in April and May.
