Japan Paves Way for Blockchain-Based Instant Settlement

Japan is taking steps to implement blockchain technology for instant settlement of stock and government bond transactions. According to a report by the Nikkei newspaper, the Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan, and financial institutions will form a study group this summer.

The group's objective is to develop a plan for using blockchain technology to enable instantaneous settlement, with a potential launch date in the early 2030s. This would allow investors to reinvest proceeds from asset sales almost simultaneously, bridging the current gap between trade execution and cash settlement.

Cash settlement for stock trades currently occurs two days after execution, while JGB transactions are settled the day after. The proposed system could also extend to international remittances.
