Japan Targets Blockchain for Real-Time Stock Settlement
Japan is planning to introduce a blockchain-based securities settlement system that will enable real-time trading and settlement of stocks and Japanese government bonds by the early 2030s.
The Financial Services Agency (FSA), Ministry of Finance, and Bank of Japan (BOJ) are working together with financial institutions to study the infrastructure. A development plan is targeted for early 2027.
Currently, stock transactions take two business days to settle, while Japanese government bond transactions take one business day. The proposed blockchain system aims to remove this settlement lag and could eventually support international remittances.
