Japan Vows Action as Yen Hits Historic Low
The Japanese government has pledged to take decisive action when necessary in response to the yen's decline against the US dollar. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated this during a press conference on October 22, 2025.
The yen had fallen to its lowest level in 39 years and eight months, reaching 163.99 against the dollar overnight in New York. This has led to speculation about intervention by Japanese authorities, which they have not ruled out.
Katayama emphasized that the government would respond appropriately as required, but declined to comment on specific exchange-rate levels. The yen's decline is attributed to its use as a safe-haven asset in times of crisis, as well as concerns about the impact of rising crude oil prices on the Japanese economy.
