Japanese Manufacturers Most Optimistic Since 2018 Despite Global Uncertainties
Japan's large manufacturers have shown their most optimistic sentiment since 2018, according to the Tankan survey released by the Bank of Japan. The headline diffusion index for big manufacturers rose to 24 in September, marking a sixth consecutive quarter of improvement.
The strong corporate earnings and resilient domestic demand are complicating the central bank's path as it weighs future interest rate adjustments. Despite global trade uncertainties and a weak yen, large manufacturers expect their sentiment index to dip to 21 in December due to concerns over potential economic slowdowns in key export markets like China and Europe.
The BOJ must balance the health of the manufacturing sector against the vulnerabilities of the domestic consumer and the stability of the financial system. A premature rate hike could strengthen the yen abruptly, hurting exporters driving the current optimism.
