Japanese Pork Prices Hit Record High Amid Weak Yen
Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries released its September food price trend survey on the 15th. The data revealed that retail pork prices hit a record high since the survey began in 2003.
The national average price for pork loin rose 3 yen from the previous month to 293 yen per 100 grams, driven by rising imported feed costs due to the weak yen and surging production expenses. Beef prices remain stubbornly high, causing demand to shift toward relatively cheaper pork, which further pushed up prices.
Egg prices also reached all-time peaks, with mixed-size 10-packs increasing 4 yen from the previous month to 309 yen. The ministry attributed this increase to seasonal promotions featuring egg-based menu items at hamburger chains and other restaurants from September, boosting demand.
