Japanese Rubber Futures Plummet on Stronger Yen and Lower Oil Prices
Japanese rubber futures declined on Monday due to lower oil prices and a stronger yen. The Osaka Exchange's contract for December delivery closed at its lowest point in about a week, down 2.0 yen or 0.48% from the previous day at 416.0 yen per kg.
The Shanghai Futures Exchange's rubber contract for September delivery also fell by 95 yuan to settle at 16,760 yuan (USD2,477) per metric ton. Analyst Jiong Gu attributed the decline to lower oil prices and expectations that the yen would not weaken beyond 164 per dollar.
Oil prices dropped over 6% on Monday after a pause in US attacks on Iran, raising hopes for a diplomatic solution and increased shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Natural rubber's value often fluctuates with oil prices due to competition from synthetic rubber made from crude oil.
