Japanese Trade Deficit Widens as Energy Costs Soar

Japan's imports and exports have reached record levels in July, according to government data. The country's trade deficit has also grown for a third consecutive month, totaling 634.5 billion yen ($4 billion). Imports surged by 27.8% from the same period last year to a seasonally adjusted 12.15 trillion yen ($77 billion), while exports rose by 23.2% to 11.51 trillion yen ($73 billion).

The increase in imports is largely due to soaring energy costs, as Japan relies heavily on oil imports. The war in Iran has led to a significant rise in crude oil prices, making imports even more expensive.

On the other hand, exports have been boosted by strong demand for Japanese goods, particularly automobiles and semiconductors. Shipments of these products have remained healthy, contributing to Japan's trade surplus.
