Japanese Yen Dips Briefly on BoJ AI Remarks Before Rebounding
The Japanese Yen experienced a brief rally during a Bank of Japan (BoJ) speech about artificial intelligence (AI) but quickly gave back those gains. BoJ Governor Ueda spoke on Tuesday at 06:35 GMT, marking his first major remarks since the September 18 interest rate hike to 1.25%. Traders are currently assigning about a one-in-four chance to a second hike on October 30, with the USD/JPY pair fluctuating around the 158.00 mark in recent sessions.
BoJ Deputy Governor Uchida noted on Monday that AI is acting as a significant positive demand shock, boosting both economic activity and prices. His comments briefly pushed the USD/JPY rate toward 157.50 before it rebounded above 158.00. Uchida also mentioned that AI has made financial conditions more accommodative, despite the BoJ's recent rate hike to tighten policy.
Wage growth data for August is due on Tuesday at 23:30 GMT, with forecasts pointing to a slowdown to 3.7% year-over-year from July's 4.7%. This potential slowdown could complicate arguments for an October rate hike, especially since Governor Ueda's remarks precede the release of these figures. The Federal Reserve's September meeting minutes, set for Wednesday at 18:00 GMT, will also influence market expectations, as the Fed's decision on October 28 precedes the BoJ's October 30 meeting.
From a technical perspective, the USD/JPY pair has found resistance near 158.50 and support just under 157.50. Buyers maintain an edge as long as the pair holds above 157.50 on a closing basis, with the next major resistance level at 159.00. A daily close below 157.00 could signal a shift in market sentiment.
