Japanese Yen Loses Safe-Haven Status Amid Rising Debt Concerns
Japan's safe-haven status is being questioned by Commerzbank analysts Michael Pfister and Volkmar Baur. They argue that despite risk-off conditions, the Japanese Yen (JPY) is struggling to maintain its traditional crisis appeal.
The Bank of Japan's (BoJ) interest rate hikes are seen as a major contributor to this decline. According to Pfister and Baur, 'With the BoJ's interest rate hikes, this scope in Japan is continuing to increase.'
Rising Japanese debt concerns are also eroding the yen's safe-haven status. The analysts suggest that the Bank of Japan should consider raising the overnight call rate sooner rather than later.
