Japanese Yen Steadies Amid Warning of Potential Intervention
The Japanese Yen has steadied after recent warnings from Tokyo and Washington about its weakness. The USD/JPY pair is trading around 157.40, virtually unchanged on Tuesday. Japanese authorities have stepped up their warnings, with Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama saying an undervalued Yen poses problems and indicating agreement with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Katayama's comments reinforce investor caution following recent warnings from Japanese officials about the currency's performance. Japan's top currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, had already said markets should take seriously the message from Tokyo and Washington regarding Yen depreciation. The prospect of coordinated action between the two countries is limiting gains in USD/JPY.
The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% on September 18, and investors are now looking at upcoming Japanese data for further clues about possible additional rate hikes. However, USD/JPY remains supported by elevated US yields and expectations of further interest-rate increases from the Federal Reserve.
