Japan's 10-Year Bond Yield Hits Three-Decade Peak Amid Inflation Concerns

Japan's benchmark 10-year government bond yield has hit a three-decade high due to inflation concerns and speculation about an impending interest-rate increase from the Bank of Japan. The 10-year JGB yield rose to 2.935%, its highest level since September 1996, after adding 1.5 basis points (bps) in trading on Tuesday.

The rise in yields was largely driven by inflation worries stoked by the ongoing Middle East conflict. However, a solid auction of 5-year JGBs saw the highest level of demand since June 2025, with buyers attracted to the higher yield on offer.

Longer-dated bond yields tend to be more responsive to inflationary concerns, and the 20-year and 30-year JGB yields rose by 2.5 bps and 4 bps, respectively, in the Tokyo morning.
