Japan's BOJ Tankan Survey: Manufacturers Improve, Non-Manufacturers Struggle
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) released its September Tankan survey on October 1, revealing an improvement in business conditions for large manufacturers. The business conditions diffusion index (DI) for large manufacturers rose by 2 points from the previous June survey to 24, surpassing a third consecutive quarter of improvement.
However, this figure fell short of market forecasts, which had predicted a DI of 25. Large non-manufacturers' sentiment took a hit, with their DI deteriorating by 2 points from the previous reading of 37 to 35, missing forecast expectations of 36.
The results indicate growing concerns over labor shortages and rising costs in the services sector. Looking ahead, the December outlook for large manufacturers stands at 21, projecting a 3-point deterioration from current conditions. Non-manufacturers are expected to decline by 5 points to 30, suggesting cautious sentiment about business conditions.
Capital investment plans for large enterprises across all industries rose 11.3% year-on-year, a slight downward revision from the 11.5% increase recorded in the June survey. This figure maintained double-digit growth but fell short of market forecasts of 12.3%. The BOJ's monetary policy decisions may be influenced by these results, as Japanese companies remain cautious about economic conditions.
