Japan's Business Sentiment Improves Despite Soaring Oil Prices
The Bank of Japan's quarterly 'tankan' survey showed that business sentiment among large manufacturers has improved for the sixth straight quarter. The key indicator, which measures companies' expectations minus those feeling pessimistic, rose to 24 from 22.
This positive reading comes despite ongoing challenges in Japan, including soaring oil prices due to the war in Iran and its impact on global trade. Brent crude is currently trading at around $98 a barrel, lower than the nearly $120 it reached earlier but still higher than before the conflict.
The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate twice this year, in June and September, to 1.25%, a three-decade high. However, this move has not yet led to a significant strengthening of the Japanese yen, which remains relatively weak due to various economic factors, including an aging population and labor shortages.
