Japan's Business Sentiment Rises for Sixth Straight Quarter
The Bank of Japan's quarterly 'tankan' survey has reported a positive read on the economy, showing that large manufacturers' sentiment has risen to 24 from 22. This marks the sixth consecutive quarter of improvement in business sentiment.
Despite widespread challenges facing Japanese society, including soaring oil prices and the war in Iran disrupting oil imports, companies are still optimistic about future conditions. The survey shows that companies foresee good conditions minus those feeling pessimistic, indicating a positive outlook.
The Bank of Japan has been raising its benchmark interest rate to combat the weak Japanese yen and higher import prices. However, the central bank's efforts have not yet translated into a stronger currency, with the US dollar trading at nearly 160 yen, up from 110-yen levels five years ago.
