Japan's Chicken Prices Soar to Record High Amid Inflation
Japan's consumers are turning to budget-friendly chicken as inflation takes hold, but this surge in demand has led to record-high prices for the protein. According to a recent survey by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the average retail price of chicken thighs at major retailers nationwide rose 15% in August to ¥156 per 100 grams.
This is the highest price recorded since the survey began in August 2003. The weak yen has also contributed to rising costs, as nearly 40% of Japan's chicken is imported.
The average price for 100 grams of pork loin also reached a record high at ¥290, while domestically produced beef loin saw a slight decrease in price to ¥836 per 100 grams.
