Mexico's Peso Surges Past 17 Per Dollar Amid Global Trade Uncertainty
Mexico's peso has made an unexpected surge past 17 per dollar, earning it the nickname 'super peso.'
The currency has risen by nearly 20% since January 2025, making it one of the best-performing emerging market currencies. The rally is attributed to several factors, including a softer US dollar and carry-trade inflows.
Graham Stock, senior sovereign strategist at RBC BlueBay Asset Management, notes that 'the peso is not unusually strong compared to other emerging market currencies.' Instead, it's the dollar's weakness relative to previous cycles that has contributed to the peso's strength.
Alejo Czerwonko, chief investment officer for emerging markets at UBS Global Wealth Management, points out that domestic factors, such as lower trade-risk premia and solid macroeconomic conditions, are also driving the peso's appreciation. Some investors view Mexico as a beneficiary of the global AI boom.
