Japan's Core Inflation Holds Steady Near BOJ Target Ahead of Rate Decision

Japan's core consumer inflation remained steady near the Bank of Japan's 2% target in August, keeping attention on the central bank's interest-rate decision and future monetary tightening. The core Consumer Price Index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food prices but includes energy costs, increased by 1.7% from a year earlier.

The reading was below the 1.8% rise recorded in July and slightly weaker than economists' expectations. A separate measure that excludes both fresh food and energy prices increased by 1.9% year-on-year.

The interaction between government subsidies, consumer demand, and imported costs remains important for the BOJ as it assesses whether inflation can remain sustainably around its target.
