Japan's CSPI Surges to Decades-High as Inflation Concerns Mount
The Bank of Japan reported that Japan's Corporate Service Price Index (CSPI) rose 3.6% in July compared to the same month last year, marking the fastest pace of service-sector inflation in decades.
The CSPI measures the prices companies pay for services, including transportation, leasing, and information services. The continued pass-through of labor costs and raw material expenses to business clients is a key factor driving the acceleration.
This trend adds to evidence that inflation is becoming more entrenched, moving beyond the temporary effects of energy and commodity price spikes. The steady climb in service prices strengthens the case for additional tightening by the Bank of Japan, which has signaled willingness to adjust rates if inflation consistently exceeds its 2% target.
