Japan's Economy Faces Dual Threats of Price Pass-Through and Rising Interest Rates
The Japanese government's Economic White Paper has highlighted concerns about accelerating price pass-through and its impact on households and small businesses. The report analyzed data from the Bank of Japan's Tankan survey, which showed that corporate price increases have accelerated compared to previous periods.
According to the white paper, the current surge in crude oil prices due to tensions in the Middle East is having a broad impact on Japan's economy. While corporate profits are high and employment conditions are favorable, household consumption behavior is being pulled in opposite directions by wage hikes and price increases.
The report also warned that prolonged increases in import prices could squeeze corporate profits and affect cash flow for small businesses with weak financial foundations. The white paper emphasized the need to assess the impact of rising interest rates on households and carefully evaluate whether Japan's economy can adapt to a new environment of rising wages, prices, and interest rates.
