Japan's Inflation Rate Surges Amid Rising Food Prices
Japan's inflation rate has been steadily increasing over the past few months. According to recent data, Japan's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 1.7% in June 2026 compared to the same period last year, up from 1.5% in May.
This increase was driven primarily by a rise in food prices, which increased by 3.2%. Energy prices, on the other hand, saw a slight decrease of 0.1% over the same period.
While Japan's inflation rate remains higher than that of Canada and Nova Scotia, it has been decelerating faster since 2024. In fact, Japan's inflation fell below that of Nova Scotia and Canada in December 2025 and has remained below the 2% target since January 2026.
It is worth noting that Japan's underlying inflation rate, which excludes fresh food and energy prices, also rose to 1.7%, down from 1.8% in May.
