Japan's Officials Reiterate Concerns Over Yen Weakness Amid Intervention Fears
The Japanese Yen (JPY) has strengthened against the US Dollar (USD) amid fears of intervention after senior officials reaffirmed their intention to address JPY weakness. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized cooperation between the two countries, with Katayama stating that undervalued Yen is problematic.
Katayama also mentioned phone talks last week with Bessent, where they agreed to beef up cooperation to ensure orderly foreign exchange markets. This follows US President Donald Trump's meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, where he raised concerns over the JPY.
Hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve (Fed) officials might limit Greenback losses, as Fed Governor Michael Barr repeated a warning that further rate increases will likely be needed to slow inflation. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack stated that inflation risks remain high and restrictive monetary policy should be maintained.
