Japan's Producer Prices Edge Up 7.2% in July, Below Expectations
Japan's producer price index (PPI) rose by 7.2% year-on-year in July, slightly below economists' expectations of 7.4%. The increase was mainly driven by higher electricity prices, which added 0.23 percentage points to the monthly rise.
Energy and chemical prices declined, contributing to the lower-than-expected growth. Despite elevated producer prices, consumer inflation remains relatively low, with headline inflation at 1.9% and core inflation at 1.6% in June.
The Bank of Japan has noted inflation risks from rising oil prices, with some members advocating for faster interest rate hikes to control inflation.
