Japan's Real Wages Rise for Sixth Straight Month, Fueling Rate Hike Speculation
Japan's real wages experienced a sixth consecutive month of growth in June, according to government data released on Wednesday. The increase was 1.6% compared to the same period last year.
The nominal average wage, which includes total cash earnings, rose by 3.4% to ¥531,677 (approximately $3,373.6) per month. This is a faster growth rate than the revised 3.3% gain in May.
Workers' base salaries increased by 3.4%, accelerating from a 3.0% rise in May. Overtime pay growth in June stood at 2.8%, matching the same rate as in May after a downward revision.
The Bank of Japan maintained interest rates at its July policy meeting, with Governor Kazuo Ueda mentioning upside risks to prices, seen as a nod for another potential rate hike as soon as September.
