Japan's Top Currency Official Warns Markets to Take Yen Warning Seriously
Japan's top currency official Atsushi Mimura has sent a strong message to markets regarding the Japanese yen. In an interview with Reuters, he emphasized that markets should take seriously the 'very clear' warning from Tokyo and Washington about excessive depreciation of the yen. This warning comes after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed concern over yen weakness during his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last week.
Japans Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama on Friday made the rare move of detailing the two leaders' discussions on exchange-rate issues, reaffirming that yen undervaluation is an issue of concern. Mimura has stated that he would closely monitor whether markets continue to take the message seriously.
The yen strengthened Monday, rising 0.3% to ¥156.62 per dollar (approximately $1). However, Mimura declined to comment on whether Japan might intervene again to support the yen, stating that he was 'neither satisfied nor reassured' by its recent movements.
