Japan's Tourism Revenue Surges Past $20 Billion Mark
Japan's foreign visitor spending has surpassed two trillion yen in Q2 2026, despite a minor contraction in total visitor arrivals. According to official data from the Japan Tourism Agency, international travelers spent over two trillion yen between April and June this year.
The growth in spending highlights the influence of long-haul and regional markets that prioritize extended stays and boutique lodging. While traditional mass tourism volumes contracted, higher individual expenditures on hotels and regional cultural activities offset the arrival dip, stabilizing the travel industry.
Key traveler segments driving this trend include Taiwan, Mexico, and the US, with average spend per person exceeding half a million yen in some cases. In contrast, China saw a substantial contraction in spending, with reduced overall volume compared to 2025 levels.
