Japan's Trade Deficit Widens Amid OPEC Tensions and Surging Oil Prices
Japan's trade deficit has widened for the fourth consecutive month due to skyrocketing oil prices. According to preliminary data from the Finance Ministry, the country recorded a 1.1 trillion yen ($7 billion) trade deficit in August.
The price of Brent crude has surged over the past year, reaching as high as $118 per barrel in April. This increase in oil costs has led to a significant rise in imports, with August's total value increasing by 28% from the same month last year to 11.15 trillion yen ($71.9 billion).
Meanwhile, exports rose by 19.3% to 10 trillion yen ($64.5 billion), driven mainly by sales of computer chips and autos.
