Japan's Trade Deficit Worsens as Oil Prices Continue to Soar

Japan's trade deficit for August totals 1.1 trillion yen ($7 billion), marking the fourth consecutive month of red ink, according to preliminary data from the Finance Ministry. The country imports virtually all its oil, which has become increasingly expensive due to surging prices caused by conflicts in the Middle East.

The price of Brent crude oil has risen significantly over the past year, reaching as high as $118 a barrel in April and currently trading above $100 per barrel. This increase has led to a 28% rise in Japan's imports last month compared to August 2022, totaling 11.15 trillion yen ($71.9 billion).

Meanwhile, Japan's exports rose by 19.3% to 10 trillion yen ($64.5 billion), primarily driven by sales of computer chips and autos. The country's exports to the U.S. grew by 24.9%, while imports from the U.S. increased by 55.2%. However, exports to the Middle East declined by 5.2%.

The Bank of Japan is set to meet later this week to decide on its benchmark interest rate, with markets expecting a raise to 1.25% from the current 0%. A stronger yen would benefit Japan's oil imports but could harm exporters like Toyota Motor Corp., as it would reduce the value of their exports when converted into yen.
