Japan's Wholesale Inflation Fuels Rate Hike Expectations
Japan's wholesale inflation continued to climb in July, reaching 7.2% year-over-year, according to data released by the Bank of Japan on August 13th.
The producer price index (PPI) rose slightly below market consensus of 7.4%, while June's revised figure stood at 7.3%. On a month-over-month basis, the July index edged up just 0.1%, a notable slowdown from June's revised 0.5% increase.
Surging import costs remain the core driver of wholesale inflation, with the yen-denominated import price index jumping 29.1% year-over-year in July, marginally below June's revised 30.1% gain but still near historic highs.
The timing of this data release is particularly sensitive, as it follows a recent shift in the Bank of Japan's policy stance. The central bank has signaled a hawkish shift, with some policy board members explicitly calling for a faster pace of rate hikes to address mounting inflation risks.
