The Japanese Yen has strengthened against the US Dollar after comments from Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted at a potential interest rate hike later this month.

Ueda stated that the BoJ will debate raising interest rates, including in September, to combat inflationary risks. Bessent also called for 'decisive' monetary steps to address the weak JPY.

The overnight index swaps now fully price in a standard 25 basis points rate hike at the BoJ's September meeting, with only a low likelihood of a 50 bps move.
