JPYC Stablecoin Price Surges Fourfold Before Crashing on Upbit
A yen-pegged stablecoin called JPYC listed on South Korea's virtual asset exchange Upbit and saw its price surge nearly four times above its reference price immediately after listing, only to crash later.
The token was designed to maintain a 1:1 peg with the Japanese yen, but it failed to deliver on this promise in the early days of trading. According to data from Upbit, 21,219 unique investors purchased JPYC at prices more than 10% above the won-yen reference rate during the five days after listing.
The price spike was largely due to insufficient circulating supply in the early listing period, with buy orders flooding in while tradable supply remained low. As a result, individual investors who entered the market trusting JPYC's promise of price stability ended up bearing the full brunt of price distortion.
