Kansas Fed Warns of 'Too Big to Fail' AI Ecosystem
Kansas City Federal Reserve President Jeff Schmid has raised concerns about the rapid expansion of the artificial intelligence industry, likening it to the pre-2008 financial crisis. He notes that as investment accelerates in AI infrastructure, there's a growing risk of systemic instability.
Schmid points out that the connections between technology companies, semiconductor firms, cloud providers, data-centre operators, energy companies, and financial institutions are becoming increasingly complex. This is similar to the situation before the 2008 crisis, where mortgage-backed securities and derivatives tied major financial institutions together.
The Federal Reserve needs to better understand these emerging relationships to determine whether they pose significant risks to the economy. Schmid's comments highlight the challenge of regulating a rapidly growing industry with many interconnected players.
