Katayama Heads to G20 Meeting Amid Yen Intervention

Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama will attend a meeting of G20 finance leaders in Asheville, North Carolina next week. During the event, she plans to contribute to discussions on the global economy and international finance.

Katayama made this announcement after a regular cabinet meeting with reporters. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is also expected to attend the event, although the central bank has not officially confirmed his trip.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously stated that he expects to meet Ueda in Asheville, and markets are watching whether Katayama will also meet Bessent on the sidelines of the event.

Last month, Japan and the US carried out coordinated currency intervention to support the weakening yen. The Japanese currency had fallen to nearly 164 yen per US dollar, its lowest level in 40 years.
