The Bank of Canada has introduced a new design for the $20 bank note featuring a portrait of King Charles III, marking the first time in over 70 years that a monarch other than Queen Elizabeth II is on the bill.

The Queen died on September 8, 2022, after a record-breaking 70-year reign. The new design replaces her portrait with one of her son, who has been featured on Canadian circulation coins since December 2023.

The $20 bill will enter general circulation in February and is part of the Vertical series, which features advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem described the new note as 'striking, symbolic, and secure,' with a design that reflects Canada's beauty and history.
