Kiwi Fruit Takes Center Stage at Macfrut 2027, With Chile in Focus
The 44th edition of Macfrut, the international fruit and vegetable trade fair, will take place in April 2027 at the Rimini Expo Centre. The event, organised by Cesena Fiere, will focus on three key themes: the kiwi as the flagship product, Chile as the featured country, and Piedmont as the partner region.
The kiwi has become a symbol of the vitality of the Italian fruit and vegetable sector, with Italia being Europe's leading producer. The country produces around 400,000 tonnes of kiwis annually, making it the third-largest producer in the world behind China and New Zealand. Italy's kiwi exports have grown significantly, with overseas sales increasing by 19.8% in volume and 26.4% in value to a total of around 700 million euros last year.
Another focus of the 2027 edition will be Chile, an emerging economy that has specialized in cherry and nut production. Between 2020 and 2025, the area under cherry cultivation in Chile rose from 39,600 to nearly 77,800 hectares, thanks to massive investment in varietal innovation. This growth in production has been accompanied by a significant increase in exports, with Chile's overseas sales of fruit and vegetables reaching a turnover of $8.5 billion in 2025.
