Klaas Knot Emerges as Leading Candidate to Replace Lagarde at ECB

Klaas Knot is among the top contenders to succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank, according to sources.

Lagarde's current term runs until October 2027, but speculation about a possible early departure has persisted for much of this year.

Knot, a 59-year-old monetary economist and former president of the Dutch central bank, served on the ECB's Governing Council for 14 years. He was critical of Mario Draghi's aggressive monetary stimulus in its early stages but eventually became more closely aligned with the ECB's policy direction under Lagarde.

Knot also chaired the Financial Stability Board from 2021, giving him experience in international financial regulation and coordination.
