Klaas Knot Emerges as Top Contender for ECB Presidency Amid Lagarde Exit Rumors
France may support Klaas Knot as the next head of the European Central Bank (ECB) in exchange for a French candidate being chosen as chief economist, according to sources. The current ECB President, Christine Lagarde, has been rumored to be considering an early exit with her term extending until 2027.
Knot, 59, served two terms as the head of the Dutch central bank from 2011 to 2025 and has since held advisory roles or campaigned for the ECB presidency. He's known for being a pragmatic policy hawk and joined the ECB during a time of financial crises in the euro zone.
Knot initially expressed reservations about Mario Draghi's stimulus measures but eventually supported them, unlike his German colleague Jens Weidmann. However, he later came into conflict with Draghi over massive stimulus efforts to rekindle inflation during the 2022 surge.
Other potential candidates for the ECB presidency include Pablo Hernandez de Cos, who has been heading the Bank for International Settlements since 2025 and served as the Bank of Spain's governor from 2018 to 2024. Joachim Nagel, the head of the Bundesbank, has altered Germany's relationship with the ECB and supported the creation of the European Deposit Insurance Scheme.
