Knot Among Top Contenders for ECB Presidency Amid Lagarde Succession Talk

Klaas Knot is among the top contenders to succeed Christine Lagarde as President of the European Central Bank (ECB), according to sources cited by Reuters. France could support Knot's candidacy as part of a broader deal that includes appointing a French candidate as the ECB's chief economist, potentially as soon as 2027.

Knot, a monetary economist and former Dutch central bank president from 2011 to 2025, has extensive experience in eurozone monetary policy. He served on the ECB's Governing Council for 14 years, initially critical of Mario Draghi's aggressive stimulus measures but eventually aligning with Lagarde's policy direction.

Other potential candidates mentioned include Pablo Hernández de Cos, who has headed the Bank for International Settlements since 2025 and previously governed Spain's central bank; Joachim Nagel, President of Germany's Bundesbank since 2022; and Nadia Calvino, European Investment Bank President. The eventual choice will depend on negotiations among eurozone governments.

While Knot has significant experience in monetary policy, some colleagues view him as a hawk who pushed for tighter measures during the 2022 inflation acceleration. Hernández de Cos is seen as a pragmatic economist willing to seek compromise based on data and research.
